Mayer Wins Twelfth Straight, But Saints Fall in MAAC Tournament

April 19, 2008

Final Stats

Loudonville, N.Y. - Junior Sarah Mayer completed an undefeated season in the conference and won her twelfth straight singles match overall, but it was not enough as the sixth seeded Siena women's tennis team fell to third seed Fairfield 4-1 this afternoon in the MAAC Women's Tennis Championships held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. The doubles duo of Karina Davis and Jessica Asselin accounted for the Saints' only other win in their season ending defeat.

Mayer knocked off Fairfield's top singles player Dana Postupack in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. The victory improved Mayer to a 21-6 record on the season, including a perfect 8-0 in the MAAC.

The Stags won three other of the singles matches, while two singles did not finish in which case no points where awarded to either team.

Fairfield captured two of the three doubles competitions, although Davis and Asselin had a solid performance to cap their season. The tandem defeated Fairfield's #2 doubles team of Michaela Cerrone and Gretchen Amberg, 8-6.

Fairfield advances to face second seeded Niagara on Saturday. The Purple Eagles topped #7 seed Manhattan 6-1 earlier in the day.
