Manhattan Spoils Siena Women's Lax Senior Day, 17-8
April 13, 2008
Alicia Psillos notched five goals and four assists and Tara Convery added four tallies as Manhattan rolled past Siena 17-8 in the final home women's lacrosse game for the Saints this season. Siena's senior class of Kathryn Marcantonio, Katie Ostrye, Emily Winslow and Lynn Harkins was honored before the game in a special Senior Day ceremony. After 11 minutes of scoreless play, the Saints got on the board when Marcantonio scored off a Harkins feed. The Lady Jaspers scored the next three goals and never trailed again. Manhattan controlled a decisive 19-8 edge in draw controls. As a result, the Lady Jaspers dominated possession and dictated tempo for the majority of the afternoon. Manhattan led 6-2 at intermission and pushed the lead to 7-2 just over a minute into the second half on Jillian McGowan's second goal of the game. Siena responded with its most spirited rally of the day, scoring three goals over a four minute and 30 second stretch to pull within 7-5. Freshman Caitlin Mikel started the flurry with an unassisted score. Ryan Tierney followed with her second goal of the game, and Alexandra Kain finished the run off a nice pass from Mikel. The Lady Jaspers scored the next eight goals to put the game away. Four of the scores game in a two-minute barrage that started just under 10 minutes into the final stanza. Convery and Psillos each found the back of the goal twice over the span. Psillos also registered two of her four assists in the decisive 15-minute outburst. Courtney Highsmith, Megan Connolly and Harkins each scored in a late 3-0 Siena run, but Pisllos and Emilia Ward followed with scored in the final 12 seconds of play to finish off the scoring. Siena goalie Liz Peters matched Manhattan's Allison Brown with eight saves. The Jaspers owned a 34-23 edge in shots, an 8-5 advantage in free position attempts and a 41-27 lead in ground balls. Both team stand at 1-3 in MAAC play. Siena has lost six of its last seven games. The Saints close out regular-season play Friday at Marist and Sunday at Fairfield.
