Final Stats

Fairfield defeated Siena 5-2 victory Saturday night to open MAAC play. With the win, the Stags moved to 6-5 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while Siena falls to 6-8 overall and 1-2 in the league.

Siena started the night by capturing the doubles point with victories in two out of the three matches. At No. 1 doubles, Siena's Nick Rutherford and Kevin Gioia edged the freshman tandem of Rob Ferrante and George Laffey, by a score of 8-6. At No. 2 doubles, Balazs Szikla and Glen Gannon were defeated by Jeremy Deuel and Jose Loren 8-4.

The Stags' only doubles win came at the third spot as sophomore Ryan Berthod and junior Chip Palumbo downed Robert Cooperman and Stefan Putyera, 8-2.

Fairfield controlled the singles matches, however, taking five out of six. At the top spot, Berthod came back from a first set loss to defeat Deuel, the reigning MAAC Player of the Week, by a margin of 2-6, 6-3, 7-5. At No. 2 singles, Ferrante beat Rutherford, 6-3, 6-2 while Laffey downed Putyera, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles . Gannon nipped Jay Godbole, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 singles while Palumbo pushed past Loren, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 singles.

Kevin Gioia defeated Szikla 6-2 and 6-2 at #5 singles for Siena's only singles win.
